Like the man said, he’s not finished yet. Even by Wayne Rooney’s standards, it has been an eventful few weeks. On Thursday night, however, he reached another personal milestone, becoming Manchester United’s record goalscorer in Europe.
That his 39th goal came in a Europa League win over Feyenoord 12 years after that memorable Champions League hat-trick against Fenerbahce matters not one jot. Rooney deserves a place out on his own ahead of Ruud van Nistelrooy and a pretty impressive list of names that includes Ryan Giggs, Denis Law, Paul Scholes and Sir Bobby Charlton.
Only Charlton’s all-time record for United remains to be conquered, and surely Rooney has two more goals in him to do it.
